Self-guided Cycling / Original tour

Italy / Innsbruck to Venice

From the Alps to the Adriatic

A wonderful bike tour starting from the Austrian border at Brenner Pass: you will cycle downhill through ancient villages, forts and green meadows of South Tyrol. Riding along the Adige River you will reach the Veneto region, with a stop at the palm-lined shores of lake Garda. Further on you will discover Verona, the town of Romeo & Juliet, with its impressive Roman arena, and then Vicenza, renowned for the classical Palladio architecture. Then you will reach the Euganean Hills and their renowned thermal district, the largest in Europe. Beautiful Padua, cradle of arts, will open the way to the Venetian lagoon, where the timeless fascination of Venice has lured passersby for centuries (and still does).

    2. Innsbruck – Bressanone (40 km by transfer + 55 km by bike)
A private transfer will take you to Brennero, where you’ll start cycling into the green Isarco valley. Your cycling day continues without difficulties through nice villages and green meadows till Fortezza, where you will see the ancient fort. Lake Varna awaits you for a relaxing break before you reach Bressanone.

    3. Bressanone – Bolzano (45 km)
Continue along the same cycle path, with few kms today: you’ll have the opportunity to visit the huge Sabiona medieval monastery, built on a rocky-hill and dominating the Isarco-valley. Overnight in Bolzano.

    4. Bolzano – Trento (65/70 km)
You will start riding along the River Adige cycle path, through orchards and the vineyards of the renowned Wine Route. Half way between Bolzano and Trento you will reach Salorno, which represents the linguistic border between the German and the Italian world. It is possible to shorten the stage by taking the train in several train stations along the way.

    5. Trento – Desenzano/Peschiera (50 km by bike + ferry)
The river Adige will take you to Rovereto, famous for its museum of modern and contemporary art. After a short ascent to Passo di San Giovanni, you will enjoy a superb view onto the Garda Lake and the little town of Torbole. Then in Riva del Garda you will take a ferry to reach the southern part of the lake.

    6. Desenzano/Peschiera – Verona (60/35 km)
After crossing the hilly landscape surrounding the Garda Lake, you will meet again the river Adige, which will take you into Verona, one of the most important and beautiful cities in the Veneto region. Worth visiting are: the Roman Arena, the Church of San Zeno and Juliet’s House.

    7. Verona – Vicenza (75/40 km)
Cycling in the countryside at the foot of Mounts Lessini, among the vineyards you will reach the castle of Soave. The flat path brings you close to the beautiful castles of Romeo and Juliet in Montecchio Maggiore, while the hilly one leads you through the Berici hills. Vicenza awaits you with its beautiful private palaces and public buildings by Andrea Palladio, the famous 16th century architect known all over the world. It is possible to shorten the stage by taking the train to San Bonifacio.

    8. Vicenza – Padua thermal district (50 km)
Cycling out of Vicenza, along the cycle path of the river Bacchiglione, you can admire the Palladian masterpiece Villa La Rotonda and the frescoes of Tiepolo at Villa Valmarana. Then, past the hamlet of Montegalda, you will head towards the Euganean Hills, where you can relax in the largest European thermal district.

    9. Padua thermal district – Mestre/Venice mainland (55 km)
Along the cycle path of the Battaglia Canal you will pass through Padua, home to one of the oldest Italian (and European) universities and rich in art and history. From here, along the Piovego Canal, you will reach Stra and will follow the Brenta Canal, overlooked by the countryside villas of the ancient Venetian nobility (Villa Pisani, Villa Malcontenta, Villa Widmann) until you reach Mestre, Venice mainland.

    10. Mestre/Venice mainland
    Departure after breakfast.

A most enjoyable time. Extremely good luck with the weather: a week earlier or a week later and we would have had snow at the Brenner Pass. A sense of utter elation on the final 6 km across the causeway (even though there was another 10 km afterwards back to the hotel).

      Departure 2017

      Online from 04 August 2017

Everyone had a great trip! They’re ready to do it again!

We had no real problems on either trip! We had a great time.

We owned the Lake Garda ferry. It was like a private excursion! Very few other people. It was very pleasurable!

Sometimes we couldn’t locate a hotel but with GPS and phones we worked through those issues. A couple of hotels were a little warm because
of the hot weather and their weak AC systems. But food and wine solves those problems quickly!

We did have to split the group on the 2nd ferry crossing going from Venice. It would have been very difficult if we travelled on a busy day! The first ferry from Venice was very confusing for us as there was at least a .5 Km line of traffic stopped to pay tolls and waiting in line. We just pushed through on our bikes and walked up to the toll station to get our bike tickets. I would recommend that you tell your customers to do this as there was no guidance or information for bikers. Just push through, get your ticket, then wait by the ramp/boarding area. The second crossing utilizes a large and a small ferry. We needed to split into 2 groups to cross at this point. No problem. It just takes time.

Porec was beautiful and the hotel was very nice, Great buffet for breakfast and supper! Actually, the hotels were all very good. We didn’t want to leave Hotel Rosa or Crystal Hotel. Beautiful and so relaxing! The staff at Hotel Al Pini were super helpful and patient with us.

You (and company) did a fantastic job with reservations and taking care of the electric bike switch for three of us. Your attention to detail is commendable as we had no reservation problems. And that was a lot of rooms to get right!
The bikes worked well and were in excellent shape. All of the restaurant reservations went smoothly and the food was fine and Ristorante Paccagnella was the stand-out favorite. They had some really special foods for us.

The guide books worked well especially once we realized to read them carefully in advance! In English we put our adjectives before the noun but in Italian the adjective goes after the noun - and remains like that in the translation.
That’s where we had some confusion if we read to quickly while biking. It's a little thing but it can cause a few problems! Nice job on the arrows. A few had become hidden but we worked through that problem with guide.

So, we thank you for all the work you did and for ordering the beautiful weather ( a little hot some days!) That’s two years that we carried our raincoats and didn’t need them.

I hope we can meet again. I’m working on 2018 trip now. Some people want to get to Norway, Sweden, Finland. Some want France, Spain. Who knows where we will end up!
