From Passau to Budapest

This amazing itinerary will lead you from Passau, the Bavarian town at the hart of three rivers and unwind along the majestic Danube river going through three capitals: Vienna, the imperial city, Bratislava, lively mittel European town and finally Budapest, the impressive bridge between western and eastern world.
  • Day by Day

    map

    1. Passau
Boarding time from 4 p.m. Use your free time and stroll through the cobblestoned old town centre and have a look at the world’s largest Catholic Church organ in the Passau Cathedral. The ship departs in the evening.

    2. Engelhartszell - Aschach (40 km)
Your first day begins with a ride through the classic scenery of the ‘Great Loop’ Donauschlinge - one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube. Along the way you will encounter tiny villages and cozy cider taverns. You can taste delicious liquors and cheese while you pay a visit to Austria’s only Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell. The famous ‘Schlogener View’ provides a wonderful view of the surrounding Austrian countryside. The boat welcomes all cyclists back on board in the charming market town of Aschach.

    3. Devin - Bratislava (45 km)
You will pedal along the former ‘Iron Curtain’, cross the green line and reach the imposing Imperial Schlosshof Palace with its beautifully terraced gardens. Follow the bike path through Austria’s ‘vegetable garden’ and the slopes of the Little Carpathians till you reach the coronation city of Bratislava, where you can explore its hidden alleyways and corners.

    4. Bratislava - Budapest | Excursion to Szentendre (25 km)
The entrance to Budapest, Hungary's capital is impressive.Enjoy Budapest during a coach tour or a guided bike tour (optional) to discover many of the highlights of this beautiful city. You can also choose to cycle to the charming town of Szentendre with its lively atmosphere and interesting art scene. You can have a taste of Hungarian culture during an evening Folklore show with traditional music, local appetizers and dance (optional).

    5. Budapest - Esztergom (45 km)
Situated in the middle of the Danube River, the idyllic isle of Szentendre shines in silent Puszta romance. History, folklore and Hungarian way of life will accompany you on your way to Esztergom where the gorgeous basilica – Hungary’s largest Catholic Church – will impress you.

    6. Esztergom - Vienna
Discover Vienna's most beautiful attractions. During a city tour by bike or bus (optional) you will be able to admire Vienna’s most impressive architecture: the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephens Cathedral, the gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard, the State Opera House, the Burgtheater and town hall and of course the colorful "Hundertwasserhaus". Take time to relax in one of Vienna’s famous cafés, while the evening ends with a classical music concert (optional) in a famous Viennese Palace.

    7. Vienna - Krems - Melk (40/45 km)
Your last biking day starts with a visit to a powerful ruin looming above the small Baroque town of Durnstein, while the blue spire of the monastery church is a landmark of the renowned Wachau Valley. Amidst dreamy towns, apricot trees, vineyards and castles, this hilly landscape enchants everybody who visits. Traditional wine taverns along the bikepath invite to savor local wines (wine tasting optional). The Benedictine Abbey of Melk, perched on a hill, overlooking the Danube, is a true architectural marvel.

    8. Passau
As you cruise back up the Danube enjoy the beauty of the lanscape on your way to Passau, where you will ll disembark at approx. 11 a.m. Any connection for further travel should be booked from midday onwards.

Due to organisational reasons, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday. Issues with high and low water, as well as logistic obstacles such as officially ordered - previously not announced - repair work on locks or bridges can modify some of the daily stretches or overnight stays and may even request a transfer by bus. These decisions are only taken by the barge’s captain.

  • Route profile

The Passau to Vienna cycling trail along the Danube river is one of the most famous and popular ones in Europe, because of its lack of difficulty which makes it accessible to any cyclist. It’s so well sign posted that you will not get lost. The Danube river will be right by your side to guide you all along anyhow. When you plan your visits to points of interest be aware that some of the vilages on either side of the river are not very well connected as bridges and ferries are not that frequent.

As you proceed from Vienna to Budapest the route could vary, as the cycling trail is mostly on the Austrian side, while in Slovakia and Hungary you will mostly cycle on low traffic roads. Also the road signs are not near as frequent, nonetheless it won’t be difficult to follow your itinerary, which is a bit kore hilly as well.

      Departure 26 June - 03 July 2022

      Online from 11 July 2022

We have done many bike tours but not with a boat and we all loved the experience. The whole process of booking it with Maddalena at Girolibero was also great, she has been extremely helpful and I will for sure be recommending Girolibero for my friends but also my clients (I'm a travel agent). The bike and barge itself exceeded my expectations (the boat, the meals and the overall experience). We had a fantastic time!

Biking is a wonderful way to see the countryside. Plus we had a tour guide which really enhances the trip. This was my first bike/boat trip and I will definitely plan more.
It was terrific and everyone on the boat went overboard (no pun intended!!!) to accommodate us.
Thank you so much. Your efforts were very much appreciated!!
